Scotland is renowned for its breathtaking wild swimming spots. From hidden gems in the Scottish Highlands to the open waters off the west coast, more of us than ever are taking the plunge and diving straight into the exhilarating hobby.

But before you take the plunge, it’s essential to be well-prepared for the unique conditions of Scotland’s wild waters.

Thankfully, experts from leading wellness retreat providers and award-winning hotel group, Crerar Hotels, have compiled a list of the essential tips any budding wild swimmer should know before diving in.

Check Water Conditions & Tides

Marc Gardner, General Manager at Oban Bay Hotel, said: “The tidal movements off Scotland’s west coast can be unpredictable, so it’s important to check times, weather conditions and water temperatures before heading out.

“Our team are on hand to ensure we have this information readily available to anyone planning on taking a wild dip.”

Acclimatise to Cold Water

“Even in the summer, Scottish waters can be particularly chilly. To avoid cold water shock, make sure to enter gradually, focus on steady breathing and allow your body to adjust to the temperature before swimming further.”

Never Swim Alone

“Always make sure you’re swimming with a buddy, or if that’s not possible, ensure someone knows your exact plans before heading out. If you are going out on your own, a bright tow float can enhance your visibility to others, including boats or other people in the surrounding area.”

Wear the Right Gear

“A wetsuit is a great way to help retain your body heat, however if you prefer to swim in just a swimsuit, make sure to bring warm clothes, a towel and a hot drink for afterwards. Neoprene gloves, socks and a swim cap can also help reduce heat loss.”

Have an Exit Plan

“Before entering the water, always ensure to identify safe exit points. Cold water can zap your energy quickly, so know your limits and plan your swim accordingly.”
