With 4.5 million tonnes of food wasted every year in the UK, the government is aiming to reduce food waste by 20% by 2025. As the UK’s largest business waste management provider, we worked with Biffa to find out attitudes and approaches to inedible food waste in the catering and hospitality sectors.
In partnership with leading industry media title, The Caterer, we commissioned research to understand UK hospitality operators’ levels of awareness and preferred practices to deal with food waste.
While 83% of operators thought food recycling was important, a third admitted they didn’t actively segregate and recycle inedible food waste – despite it being the right thing for the environment and an opportunity to lower their broader waste disposal bills.
We called for hospitality operators to measure their food waste and implement processes to reuse, reduce or recycle it. We also raised the profile of Biffa’s Anaerobic Digestion food processing facility in Cannock, the largest of its kind on Europe, which generates 530 million kWh of energy for the UK national Grid annually.
