In what will be remembered as the largest diagnostic project in British history, scientists, academics, public and private organisations joined forces to set up a network of Covid testing laboratories, known as “Lighthouse Labs”.
Within 23 days the Lighthouse Lab in Alderley Park was processing 10,000 samples a day. Working tirelessly to protect the nation, over 700 trained specialists scaled that capacity up to around 80,000 samples a day within months.
Established by the Medicines Discovery Catapult, the facility in Alderley Park joined the nation’s fight against coronavirus, testing samples and providing data to inform the Government’s response to the pandemic.
The work of the labs played an essential part in keeping the nation safe, and it was our job to work with the Alderley Park team and across the Lighthouse Labs network to shine a light on the army of specialists working quietly in the background. We were always on hand to help navigate the heightened scrutiny that being at the forefront of the largest diagnostics network in UK history would inevitably bring.
Through a combination of proactive outreach and day to day press office activity, we ensured there was a constant stream of coverage in our key business, regional and trade titles.
We carefully curated announcements around testing milestones, and we kept the nation informed when the looming threat of a new variant emerged.
