New social media league table names most influential attendees
Former US President Barack Obama has trumped current President Joe Biden in a global power league ranking high-profile COP26 attendees based on social influence.
The report by digital PR agency, tigerbond, has been released this week ahead of the climate change conference kick-off in Glasgow on Sunday 31 October.
It ranks delegates according to their social media following across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, displaying how influential each attendee is on each platform and overall.
Barack Obama has the most followers across all three platforms with an impressive 220.8million. In second place is US President Joe Biden with over 60million, followed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who proves influential on all three platforms with a combined total of 41.5m followers.
While the top ten is dominated by world leaders, Swedish environmental activist, Greta Thunberg earns fourth place with a global reach of 21.4m.
She is closely followed by Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth, who will now be attending virtually – she tops the UK leader board with the ability to reach 20.6m followers from The Royal Family social accounts.
UK PM Boris Johnson ranks in 9th place with a reach of 7.2m while host nation First Minister Nicola Sturgeon lands in 18th place with a reach of just under 2m.

Laurna Woods, CEO of tigerbond, said: “As global leaders and campaigners descend on Glasgow they will all be looking at ways to communicate the part they are playing in tackling climate change. Social media is one of the most powerful platforms to help them land their messages and initiate real change.
“Our league charts the power of social media reach and the audiences these attendees have at their fingertips. With so many influential leaders descending on our home city, our expert data and social teams were keen to analyse the social power the delegates have to communicate to a global audience, charting the highs and lows as the event progresses. It will be interesting to measure the power of #COP26 to engage and inspire real change and action.”
*The tigerbond league table is based on the verified social media accounts for each expected attendee across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. After noting the number of followers attendees had on each platform, combined totals were calculated and they were then ranked from 1-25. Attendees and figures correct at time of issue. These figures will be updated regularly throughout the course of the conference.
Headquartered in London, tigerbond has offices across the UK, including host city Glasgow where the agency was founded, in Ireland and coast-to coast in Canada. The team deliver integrated marketing and communications services from PR and social through to digital marketing, creative and web.
